Experience Oakland

All guests will attend a welcome from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and then students will have a choice of which mock class they would like to attend. Please select the mock class that you would like to attend:

• Foundations of Public Health - This mock lecture introduces students to public health, health equity, and population-level approaches to improving community health, distinguishing public health from individual healthcare. Students will explore the concept of population health and examine how social determinants of health shape health outcomes. The lecture grounds these concepts with real life examples, helping students see how public health approaches operate beyond the individual, clinical encounter.
• Thinking with Buildings - We'll look at how our built environment affects the way we think about space, people, community, and the environment. Students will see tools and artifacts from the studio - models, drawings, mock-ups, prototypes - and learn how they are used to craft thoughtful design iterations.
• The Magic of Materials: The Science Behind Everything We Engineer - What does a bouncing racquetball, a metal that remembers its shape, and melting chocolate have in common? They reveal the surprising science of materials! This lecture explores how materials respond to temperature and how engineers use these properties to design everything from everyday products to spacecraft.
• Buffers in Biology - This lecture will take students through understanding pH and what buffers are. Then, we will work through a case study of how this knowledge can be applied to a medical emergency situation to treat a patient.
• Love in the Age of AI - AI companions have arrived. Millions of us chat with chatbots on a daily basis. Some of us call them friends. Others call them partners. The purpose of this lecture is to get underneath the headlines about AI companions to think as philosophers do about this issue: What does the rise of AI relationships reveal to us about what we want – and what we need – from real human love? We will use the rise of AI companions as the lens to ask a series of perennial philosophical questions. Is love a kind of merging with another person, or does it require difference and otherness? Can you be in love with something that has no interiority? In contrast to popular portrayals of love, does love require risk, vulnerability, and resistance? And who gets left out when some people are able to find connection with other humans while others are left with non-human substitutes? In this mock lecture, you will see how philosophers look at contemporary issues to ask fundamental questions about what it means to be human. By the end of the class, you will have thought together with your peers as philosophers about that age-old question: what is love?
• Introduction to Innovation! - For true Innovation to work, an interdisciplinary team must collaborate. So, it does not matter what you want to major in, this lecture/course will apply to you if you want to push the boundaries of what is possible. The lecture will cover parts of the first class during the semester of the course with some Q&A.
• LLM Fundamentals for AI Coding - On this session we will discuss the core elements of an LLM in order to understand how we can leverage them best for AI Coding. We will learn when to use GenAI, how LLM works and how harnesses use them to create AI Coding agents.
